PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a back of a hand authentication system and a back of a hand authentication method, deciding the personal identification of a user from the vein pattern of the back of a hand, by matching a most stable branch point of a vein pattern having an optimal branch feature, a branch characteristic and a weighted value of the optimal branch point. PSOLUTION: The back of a hand authentication system includes a back of a hand authentication terminal unit having a communication control section, a personal identification code input means, a display means for displaying the decision result of the personal identification code, a microswitch for starting imaging, a finger imaging camera for imaging a finger image of the user, a back of a hand imaging camera for imaging a back of a hand of the user, and a video decoder for converting each image from the finger imaging camera and the back of a hand imaging camera into a digital original image and outputting it; and a back of a hand authentication server having a processor for performing authentication processing, an authentication information database for preserving a criterion image for use in the authentication processing and optimal distribution characteristic information of the vein pattern, a temporary memory for temporarily storing information when performing the authentication processing, and an external device interface for outputting an authentication result to an external device.
