The device has a pressure sensor (10) for detecting an opened condition of a tank cover (2). A locking device (15) is operatable by a control unit (12) for locking a vehicle door. The locking device is operatable during detection of the opened condition of the tank cover by the pressure sensor, in order to lock the vehicle door. A crash and/or precrash sensor system (21) is provided for detection and/or determination of an accident, where the vehicle door is unlocked during detection of an accident and/or a forthcoming accident. An independent claim is also included for a method for the avoidance of the damage of a tank cover.
