The device has a spindle unit (1) with a tool spindle (3) rotatably driven by a spindle drive (2). A tool (5) that operates on a workpiece (4) is fastenable at the tool spindle, and a moving equipment (8) is provided for the spindle unit. The tool spindle in the spindle unit is supported at radial bearings (13a, 13b) and an axial bearing (14). The radial bearings and/or the axial bearing is designed as an adjustable magnetic bearing with adjustable bearing slots. An independent claim is also included for a method for surface processing of a metallic or ceramic workpiece.
