The method involves detecting another traffic user by an image recording unit. The lighting devices of the vehicle (1,2) are identified by image comparison. The lighting devices are classified as per the type of illumination. The classification of the categories of front headlights (3,4) and rear lights (5,6) are considered. The information is tracked over the lighting devices covering the type of image recordings over the time. The information is considered for determining the travel direction of vehicles.
