The method involves sampling and digitizing current in a circuit breaker. Two wavelet coefficients of two segmentation levels are calculated for a preset number of digital current values in direct succession by using a wavelet transformation. The wavelet coefficients are compared quantitatively to each other if the last current value in direct succession is larger than the limit current. The circuit breaker is triggered by an electronic overload trigger (8), if the wavelet coefficient of a higher segmentation level is larger than the wavelet coefficient of a lower segmentation level. An independent claim is also included for a circuit breaker i.e. low voltage circuit breaker.
