The method involves determining an actually prevailing external temperature value by an external temperature sensor. The determined external temperature value is fed to a controller under normal conditions. An external temperature value is measured and transmitted to the controller in a disturbed condition at which the external temperature sensor fails. The value is utilized during the disturbed condition. An intake air temperature value of intake air in an engine compartment is used for the measuring the value.
