The method involves calculating and/or determining a thermal load of a clutch. A controller is provided for controlling the clutch. The speed and/or the torque of an engine and/or the speed of a transmission input shaft are determined and/or calculated, for determining the friction power of the clutch. The friction power is integrated over a determined time interval. The integrated friction power is effectively adapted, and the clutch is partially opened, during reaching of the determined frictional energy threshold value, i.e. during danger of a thermal overloading of the clutch. An independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring thermal load of a clutch of a motor vehicle.
