METHODS FOR DETERMINING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF AN INDIVIDUAL THERAPEUTIC TREATMENT AND FOR SELECTING AN INDIVIDUAL SUFFERING FROM CERTAIN INFLAMMATORY TREATMENT. The inflammatory state in an individual is examined by determining the level of expression of the adenosine receptor A-3 ~ (A-3-AR) in leukocytes (WBC), for example, circulation of WBCs from the individual. A high level of expression of Δ 3 AR AR is indicative of an inflammatory state in the individual. This assay can be used to determine the severity of inflammation in an individual and to monitor the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory treatment. Also, the level of expression may be used to select individuals who will receive an anti-inflammatory treatment comprising an A 3 -ARR agonist.
