The method involves bringing air into a direct contact cooler (5) in direct contact with a coolant. Warm coolant stream is discharged from the cooler and supplied to an evaporation cooler (17) in an operating mode. The warm coolant stream in the evaporation cooler is brought in direct contact with dry gas (19), and cold coolant stream is discharged from the evaporation cooler and supplied to the contact cooler. A part of warm coolant stream is not supplied to the cooler, and a part of cold coolant stream is supplied to the contact cooler in another operating mode.
