The method involves calculating volume flow discharged from a piston pump or a proportional factor such as pressure change, using mathematical models that utilize linear approach for obtaining a coefficient of the piston pump, where the coefficient is confined to a minimal value. The coefficient is calculated by taking into consideration a temperature-independent parameter and speed of pump. The parameter is estimated by taking into account the secondary-side pressure and a temperature-independent factor. An independent claim is also included for a control device comprising a unit for determining volume flow discharged from a piston pump or a proportional factor such as pressure change.
