The method involves estimating the adhesion and the real transverse acceleration of a motor vehicle. A value of the control loss transverse acceleration is associated to a value of the estimated adhesion, using a reference model, and the real transverse acceleration of the vehicle is compared with the control loss transverse acceleration. A motor vehicle derivative calculation model e.g. cycling model and kinematics model, is selected according to the comparison result. The derivative of the vehicle is calculated according to the selected calculation model. The reference model is a cartography providing the reference acceleration of the vehicle according to the adhesion of the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining the derivative of a motor vehicle.
