The internal combustion engine (1) has an inlet line (2), an outlet line (3) and an exhaust gas return line (4) for recirculation of exhaust gas from the outlet line into the inlet line. A particle separator (9) is provided, which has two particle separation areas. The exhaust gas return line downstream the former particle separation area and upstream the latter particle separation area branches off from the outlet line.
