The method involves topographically measuring a surface of a steel thin sheet coil by a topography measuring system (T). Roughness parameters are determined by a process computer (P) based on topography measurement values (W). A characteristic sheet quality of the sheet coil is determined based on the parameters. A structure of a painted component surface is predicted by corresponding control loops. The predicted painted component surface structure is compared with a target parameter (S) of the structure relative to correlation. The target parameter is stored in a signal comparator (SK2).
