PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the formation ratio of hydrocarbon with not less than 5 carbon atoms which is best suited for a fuel oil, when synthesizing the hydrocarbon from a constituent gas, using the iron-based catalyst as the FT reaction catalyst.;SOLUTION: The iron-based catalyst is obtained by forming an iron hydroxide sediment from an aqueous iron sulfate solution and calcining the sediment. The aqueous iron sulfate solution may contain a silica precursor or the silica precursor and activated carbon. The obtained iron-based catalyst contains an iron oxide particle of a magnetite structure and an iron oxide particle of a hematite structure.
