PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To convert CO, CO2 and H2 in reformed gas of hydrocarbons into methane by their reaction using a catalyst obtd. by subjecting an amorphous alloy consisting of Zr and at least one of Co and Ni as a precursor to oxidation- reduction treatment. ;SOLUTION: An amorphous allay consisting of 20-80 at.% Zr and the balance essentially at least one of Co and Ni is used as a precursor and subjected to oxidation-reduction treatment to obtain the objective amorphous alloy catalyst 1. Reformed gas 6 of hydrocarbons enters a 1st reaction tube 2 from the top and CO, CO2 and H2 in the gas 6 cause exothermic methanation reaction producing methane and water in the presence of the catalyst 1. The gas 6 is then cooled to the original temp. fit for methanation reaction with a cooler 5 in a passage 3 and produced water 7 is separated. The remaining gas enters the upper part of a 2nd reaction tube 2, methanation reaction is caused again in the presence of the catalyst 1 and the gas leaves the tube 2 from the bottom.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
