The method involves determining constant charging voltage (Usoll) of a battery in a charging phase from a maximum allowable charging voltage (Umax), constant-current charging voltage (U1) and charging voltage (U2), where the constant-current charging voltage charges the battery with maximum allowable charging current (Imax). The charging voltage is determined from actual charging current (Ilad) according to specific equation relating to maximum allowable equilibrium voltage (OCVmax), battery internal resistance (Ri), actual charging current and safety factor that is less than 1. An independent claim is also included for a device for executing a method for charging a battery with a proportional control unit.
