The method involves recording multiple characteristic data that is collected from a motor vehicle (105), and determining criterion based on multiple characteristic data. The characteristic data describes a parameter, which depends on speed of the motor vehicle. The characteristic data describes acceleration in or around single or multiple degrees of freedom of the motor vehicle and actuation of control elements i.e. control computers (170, 175) of the motor vehicle. The characteristic data describes fuel consumption and intervention of a driver assisting system (145) of the motor vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining the criterion that provides information about type of handling of a motor vehicle.
