The method involves providing a radar image (1) of a surrounding region in front of a motor vehicle (4) by using a radar apparatus with a synthetic aperture of a driver assistance device of the motor vehicle. The radar image is provided by detecting multiple segments of the surrounding region by the radar apparatus. A track tangent line (Y') is determined from a lane model i.e. clothoid lane model. A characteristic of a track (3) located in front of the motor vehicle is determined based on the radar image and the track tangent line. An independent claim is also included for a driver assistance device comprising a radar apparatus.
