The method involves determining a rotational speed of a variable speed motor. A predetermined amount of energy is applied to the variable speed motor to accelerate the rotation of a drum (30). The predetermined amount of energy is removed from the variable speed motor. A coast time for the variable speed motor is determined to return the rotational speed. A load size of the laundry load within the treatment chamber (32) is determined based on the predetermined amount of energy and the determined coast time.
