PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a feature identifying device capable of exactly identifying the types of features without the need for complex calculation.;SOLUTION: The feature identifying device comprises a feature detecting means, a passing time calculating means, a feature dimension calculating means, and an identifying means. The feature detecting means is mounted on a mobile object and detects a feature present above the mobile object. The passing-through time calculating means calculates, in accordance with a detection signal from the feature detecting means, the passing-through time of the mobile object passing-through below the feature. The feature dimension calculating means calculates, in accordance with the passing-through time calculated by the passing-through time calculating means and the moving speed of the mobile object at the time of passing-through below the feature, the dimension of the feature in the traveling direction of the mobile object. The identifying means identifies, in accordance with the dimension of the feature calculated by the feature dimension calculating means, the type of the feature.
