The machine for the production of cigarettes uses strips of cigarette paper (10) to be wrapped around a tobacco strand (12) or a filter. The cigarette paper strip is drawn from a supply bobbin (17) to be secured in an initial position (14) in its movement path to the shaping unit (19,20), to be cut (13). Before the cigarette paper is fixed at the initial position, it is drawn into a suction channel (42) which branches off the movement path.
