A genetically modified yeast cell that has a genome and an exogenous functional xylose isomerase gene, in which the exogenous xylose isomerase gene is operably linked to promoter and terminator sequences that are functional in the yeast cell, the yeast cell having also modified a deletion or alteration of a native functional xylose reductase gene that produces an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of xylose into xylitol, and the cell also having a deletion or alteration of a native pyruvate decarboxylase gene.
