The orthosis has a lower cuff (45) engaging a limb below a limb joint and coupled to an abutment shell (42). A tensioning band (50) e.g. lateral-medial portions (51, 53) and tensioning cable, extends from the shell to the cuff, and is connected to the shell and the cuff with a force fit. The cuff includes a pressure initiating portion (49) coupled to the band. The band is stretched by a movement of the joint when the orthosis is in place to exert compression by the pressure- initiating portion on an underlying soft-tissue area of the limb to damp or limit the movement. The tensioning band is made from an inelastic flexible material and elastic material.
