The device (101) has a field controller (103) for adjustment of exciting current of an electrical generator, and a rectifier (105) e.g. active rectifier, for rectifying alternating voltage of the generator. The rectifier and the field controller are thermally coupled to a common over-temperature protective device (109). The field controller and the rectifier are arranged on a common cooling body. A phase bridge of the rectifier for a phase of the generator is thermally coupled with the field controller. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an electrical generator.
