The reciprocating internal combustion engine has variable compression ratio, a cylinder with inlet- and outlet valves and a corresponding valve seat rings that are arranged as valve seat ring sleeves (1,2) which are adjustable in valve seat ring grooves provided in cylinder head. The valve seat ring grooves press the valve seat ring sleeves to the valve seats of the inlet- and outlet valves during insertion in the compression volume with its valve seats depending on the penetration of the valve seat ring sleeves on the compression volume, and thus the compression ratio is varied.
