The method involves performing power prediction for each of battery strands (11, 12) and evaluating results (U-Pred1, U-Pred2) of the power predictions of each battery strand. Another power prediction is performed based on evaluation results of the former power prediction. Threshold values (Out3) and/or prognosticated current values (Out4) are computed for a battery system (10) based on results (I-Pred-Short, I-Pred-Long, U-Pred- Short, U-Pred-long) of the latter power prediction, where the threshold values contain border voltages and/or marginal currents. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for charging and/or discharging a battery system (2) a common battery controller.
