The process comprises passing wastewater through a filtration bed constituted of ash-free pumice, which is contacted with a base (5-10 vol.%) that is inoculated by aerobic bacteria to obtain treated water, and passing the treated water through the filtration bed constituted of ash-free pumice, which is contacted with a mineral acid (8-12 vol.%). The pumice, which is contacted with the base, has a grain size of 3-12 mm, and the pumice, which is contacted with the mineral acid, has a grain size of 0.1-3 mm. An independent claim is included for an installation for filtering wastewater.
