The method involves determining (S100) a measurement for a distance in an axial direction of a shaft between a reference point at a housing and a reference point at a rotor. The torque is determined (S200) on the basis of a characteristic curve for the relationship between the distance and the torque. An amplitude value of a signal of a sensor unit is averaged over an integer number. The sensor unit monitors the rotational angle of the electric motor.
