The method involves detecting a full load condition of an internal combustion engine, and modeling an air mass reference value for the full load operation based on an actual air mass flow and a rotational speed of the internal combustion engine. A torque model of the internal combustion engine is adjusted to the reference value. A maximum requested torque of the internal combustion engine is determined from the adjusted torque model.
