The method involves determining a collision situation between a vehicle (301) and an object (302) e.g. Pedestrian, in vicinity of vehicle in response to movement information of the vehicle and position and movement information of the object. Another collision situation between the vehicle and the object is determined. Crash severity forecasts (608, 610) of the vehicle are determined in response to the former and the latter situation, respectively. Engagement of an actuator of the vehicle is determined based upon the crash severity forecasts. An independent claim is also included for a driver assistance system for a vehicle.
