The present invention relates to an elevator, and more particularly, to a wire type elevator and a method of preventing a crash of the same, in which the wire type elevator includes a plurality of elevating units to vertically lift up and down an elevating cart, a guide to guide a movement of the elevating cart, and a deceleration unit provided on the guide to prevent the elevating cart from crashing. To the end, the elevator of the present invention includes: an elevating cart formed therein with a containing space; a plurality of first elevating units coupled to the elevating cart to vertically move the elevating cart; a second elevating unit separately coupled to the elevating cart to prevent the elevating cart from crashing in a dangerous situation; and a controller to control the first elevating unit to vertically move the elevating cart to identically control vertical velocities and moving directions of each first elevating unit.
