The method involves providing steering wheel angle for measuring desired steering wheel angle for steerable wheel (5a,5b) of the motor car such that electric servo-drive (8) with electric motor (9) is performed by steering handle (2). Several phase windings (9a) are arranged for the servo support. The servo support is switched-OFF within a predetermined time period upon detection of a fatal error in the electronic power steering system (1), when the shutdown of the servo support of the electric motor is temporarily short-circuited selectively.
