The hydrothermal carbonization allows the production of coal from biomass. At the beginning of the carbonization process, however, this biomass can contain components that are not suitable for carbonization. In addition to coarse soiling from broken glass, etc., these are in particular sand and silt, and the silt cannot be removed due to its fineness using simple filter methods. The invention therefore provides for the removal of process water from the reaction space, which is subjected to cleaning in a sedimentation filter after the carbonization reaction has started and the silt is no longer retained in the biomass. The process water is then radiated back into the reaction space in order to keep the biomass-process water mixture in motion and to prevent the silt from settling at the bottom of the reaction space.
