The device has one or more sensors for determining the distance of a vehicle body to currently traveled road surface (8) in a contact-free manner, where corresponding signals are fed to an evaluation unit (17). The sensors are contact-free detecting distance sensors (12), which are adjustable between an approximately horizontal detection direction (13) detecting the distance to the obstacle and a lane detection direction (14) detecting the distance to the currently traveled road surface. The contact-free detecting distance sensors detect the run-time of an emitted and reflected measuring beam.
