The method involves changing temperature of a fuel cell stack (10) by using a temperature control element designed as a Peltier element (22). A flow channel (16) of the fuel cell stack exhibiting the temperature control element is cooled by the temperature control element to temperature at which water condenses, during a cooling operation when water is present in the fuel cell stack, where a reactant of respective flow fields is supplied by fuel cells of the fuel cell stack. The flow channel is cooled to the temperature of the fuel cell stack during shutdown of the fuel cell stack. An independent claim is also included for a fuel cell stack.
