A matrix for dry storage of a biological sample, comprising: (a) a matrix material that dissolves or dissociates in a solvent, allowing the complete or substantial recovery of a biological sample dried or biological material after hydration , rehydration or other reconstitution with sample solvent, wherein the matrix material comprises a 2-hydroxyethyl material selected from poly (vinyl alcohol), polyvinylpyrrolidone, carboxymethylcellulose, and poly (2-ethyl-2-oxazoline), or wherein the matrix material comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of polyethylene glycol, agarose, poly-N-vinylacetamide, poly (4-vinylpyridine), poly (phenylene oxide), crosslinked acrylamide, polymethacrylate, carbon nanotubes, polylactide, copolymer lactide / glycolide copolymer, hydroxymethacrylate, calcium pectinate, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose acetatosuccinato, heparin sulfate proteoglycan, HIAL acid uronic, glucuronic acid, N-terminal domain of thrombospondin-1 binding to heparin, fibronectin, a conjugate of peptide / modifier water soluble polymeric and collagen, or comprises at least one matrix material comprising a polymer, wherein the polymer does not covalently self-assemble and has the formula - [- X] nen X is -CH3, -CH2-, -CH2CH (OH) -, -CH2CH (OH) -, substituted -CH2CH (COOH) -, -CH2CH (COOH) - substituted -CH = CH2, -CH = CH-, C1-C24 alkyl or substituted alkyl, alkenyl or C2-24 substituted alkenyl, polyoxyethylene, polyoxypropylene, or a random or block copolymer thereof; and wherein n is an integer having a value of about 1-100, 101-500, 501-1000, 1001-1500, 1501-3000 or; and (b) at least one stabilizer comprising an inhibitor that is a biological inhibitor or a biochemical inhibitor, wherein the biological inhibitor or biochemical inhibitor is validamycin A; wherein the matrix is prepared by drying a solution comprising from 0.1% to 10% by weight-volume of the matrix material; wherein the matrix is obtained by air drying at ambient temperature or suitable elevated temperature, and / or by drying under a stream of gas suitable as a stream of filtered air, CO2 or an inert gas such as nitrogen or another gas suitable drying of a solution.
