The present invention relates to a power saving system and method in a power plant using a static var compensator (SVC) capable of preventing a transient phenomenon such as a momentary phase advance, a voltage increase, etc. by controlling a portion of power which is used in a power generation facility in the power plant and contains a large quantity of coil components to generate reactive power with a low power factor at a same speed as a load operated in the power plant by using an SVC installed in parallel on an auxiliary transformer end in the power plant. The power saving system in a power plant using an SVC comprises: an excitation transformer to convert power generated by a generator installed in the power plant into first power to supply the first power; a main step-up transformer to convert the power into second power higher than the first power of the excitation transformer; an auxiliary transformer to convert the second power of the main step-up transformer into third power for a load needed to operate internal facilities in the power plant; a start-up transformer to receive power from the outside when the generator stops operating to start supplying power to the internal facilities in the power plant; a summation current transformer to sum up currents applied from a rear end of the auxiliary transformer and a rear end of the start-up transformer; an automatic power factor controller relay to detect reactive power by a power factor from the summation current; and an SVC device to compensate the reactive power detected by the automatic power factor controller relay.
