composition conferring UV protection ability, use of the composition, method of attenuating the effects of UV light on a substrate exposed to solar radiation, and substrate coated with or formed of a composition. The invention provides a composition which confers UV protection ability comprising a coated particulate material having effect substantially in the crystalline rutile habit and having an average particle size greater than or equal to about 0.5? dispersed in a medium at a concentration in the range of about 1% by volume and about 40% by volume, based on the total volume of the composition. The composition may be colored or non-colored and applied to one or more surfaces of a substrate to provide UV light protection without also enhancing the UV light activated photocatalytic effects that are generally observed.
