A system for determining erosion in a river bank (2) using a laser based range finder comprising means (11) for transmitting electromagnetic waves from a first river bank (1) to a second river bank (2) opposite to the first river bank (1); means (12) for receiving said electromagnetic waves reflected by the second river bank (2) at the first river bank (1); means (13) for computing in real time the distance between the first river bank (1) and the second river bank (2) based on a time of flight of said electromagnetic wave; a means (14) for determining in real time the erosion in bank (2) if the time of flight of the said electromagnetic wave is more in comparison to earlier time of flight, determined by reiteration of said transmitting and receiving.
