The composition of the invention is based on zirconium oxide in a mass proportion of at least 25%, and it comprises between 15% and 60% of cerium oxide, between 10% and 25% of oxide of yttrium, between 2% and 10% lanthanum oxide and between 2% and 15% oxide of another rare earth; it has, in addition, after calcination for 10 hours at 1150 ° C., a specific surface area of at least 15 m 2 / g and a cubic phase. It is obtained by forming a mixture comprising compounds of zirconium, cerium, yttrium, lanthanum and the additional rare earth; precipitating this mixture with a base; by heating in an aqueous medium said precipitate; adding a surfactant and calcining the precipitate. This composition can be used as a catalyst.
