The press (1) has a press box arranged in a pressing direction against a press channel (3), and a filling shaft (2) arranged above the box. The shaft is opened in an upper region, and a loose material passes into the box or into the press channel through the shaft, where compression takes place in the press channel and the box. A selectively operable unit i.e. wall plate, releases a material bridge made of a filled-in waste material, and is arranged in a transition section between an inner surface portion of a side wall (7) of the shaft and a boundary wall (4) of the box.
