The present invention relates to methods for on demand pre-exposure prophylactic treatment of HIV infection. In particular, the present invention relates to a method for on demand pre-exposure prophylactic treatment of a subject at substantial risk for HIV infection comprising administering orally the subject with a combination of a therapeutically effective amount of emtricitabine and tenofovir prior and after to exposure to a potential source of HIV.
