To provide a magnetic recording medium increasing an acceptance rate of a glide test without nitriding a protective layer.SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium 11 has a magnetic layer 2, a protective layer 3, and a lubricant layer 4 formed in contact with the protective layer in this order on a non-magnetic substrate 1. The protective layer contains carbon atoms or carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms, and the content of nitrogen atoms is less than 1 atom%. The lubricant layer contains an organic fluorine compound, and the organic fluorine compound has a divalent perfluoropolyether group and a fullerene skelton.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
