A method for controlling an air dryer by utilizing an air dryer (1) of the present invention includes a cold mode, wherein, when an engine start is detected and a wintertime condition in which air temperature is decreased to a freezing temperature is detected in a controller (50), a path switchover of an air path (8) is formed in order to change the flow of compressed air by turning on/off an MV1 valve (5-1), an MV2 valve (5-2), and an MV3 valve (5-3) of the air dryer (1), before the inside of the air dryer (1) is heated by the compressed air of a high temperature and a high pressure which is filled into an air tank (40) by the path switchover, thereby thawing a purge valve (6). Therefore, a heater is removed because the compressed air is used for thawing the purge valve (6) in wintertime. In addition, in a conventional regeneration mode, the compressed air is used in order to allow emulsion of a cartridge (7) to be discharged.
