To provide a novel method of diagnosing NAFLD and NASH, which can be more easily implemented and does not burden patients and medical professionals.SOLUTION: A method of detecting NAFLD or NASH or predicting risk thereof is provided, comprising measuring a total acylcarnitine level in a biological sample collected from a subject, and comparing the measured total acylcarnitine level with a reference value, the biological sample being blood, serum, or plasma.
