The turbocharger (1) has a drive shaft (3); at least one impeller (7.1) connected to a first axial end part (4) of the drive shaft (3); an electric motor (12) comprising a motor stator (13) and a motor rotor (14), the motor rotor (14) being connected to a second axial end part (5) of the drive shaft (3); an annular motor spacing (16) defined between the motor stator (13) and a rotor assembly formed by the drive shaft (3) and the motor rotor (14); an engine cooling arrangement configured to cool the electric motor (12) with a flow of refrigerant. The engine cooling arrangement is arranged so that, during operation of the turbocharger (1), the flow of refrigerant enters the annular engine space (16) at a first end of the electric motor (12 ) turned towards the at least one impeller (7.1) and leaves the annular motor spacing (16) at a second end of the electric motor (12) opposite the first end of the electric motor (12).
