A gas turbine engine with an afterburner 17 induced in the bypass duct 4 of the engine to combust bypass air 28, and where a bypass fan 3 can be disengaged from the engine’s core shaft 16, and retracted into a cylinder, where the engine also comprises a shock deflector needle 1, attached to the hub 22 of the engine. When accelerating from subsonic to supersonic speeds, the bypass fan is retracted, allowing the engine to operate as a hybrid ramjet/turbojet engine. When decelerating from supersonic speeds to subsonic, the bypass fan can be again extended to return to normal turbojet operation.
