The Chinese multinational state, officially composed of fifty-six minzu 民族, is promoted as the ‘natural' and ‘historical' foundation of the Chinese nation. Spectacular displays of the ‘minority minzu' (shaoshu minzu 少数 民族) give visibility to the conception of a united nation and thus sustain national unity and the social structure. This dissertation looks into images of the ‘minority minzu' in the cinema of the People's Republic of China and attempts to situate these images in the historical context of the construction of the Chinese nation-state after 1949. The analysis focuses on two specific periods: from 1950 to 1965 and from the mid-1980s to 2005.
