A STUDY OF COMBAT LEADERSHIP IN THE AIR FORCE BY USE OF A RATING SCALE

On the remaining nine items of the top ten, the best leader was characterized by superior quality and speed of combat decisions, less concern with personal advantage, better flying judgment;show¬ed greater responsibility for his men in combat;had greater personal acceptability, sincerity, and courage;shouldered responsibility more easily and was more impartial.nIt is especially noteworthy that only three and at the most four of these ten top factors were closely related to actual combat flying proficiency. Characteristics considered essential to good interperson¬al relationships were as effective in discriminating good from poor leaders as items relating to combat efficiency.
