EDA's (Economic Development Administration's) Indian Economic Development Program within the Federal Context. EDA and Other Federal Programs: Final Report

The purpose of this study is an examination of the context in which EDA provides funding for economic development on Indian reservations. There are three related parts to the effort. The first is an examination of the Indian economic development literature. This review provides information on reservation conditions and the local context--that is, the unique political, cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of reservations which affect economic change. The second activity is an examination of the Federal context of Indian economic development assistance. This includes a review of 143 non-EDA Federal programs administered by 19 agencies and departments. Using criteria developed in conjunction with EDA, 36 major non-EDA economic development programs were selected for detailed study.
